Notre Dame pushes for Operating Systems (OS) updates whenever they are stable for an extended period of time. However, the process for updating on a school computer is a little different than on a personal computer, mostly because the update is run through self service.
To complete an OS update, follow these steps:
1) Make sure all of your files are saved onto Google. If you have any files saved directly to your MacBook, move them into your Google Drive. This backs up your files just in case. If you have any issues with moving documents, please email tech@ndapa.org.
2) Have your MacBook open, plugged into power, and connected to the internet. Note that this update takes 1-2 hours, so please plan on not having a device during this time.
3) Close all files and programs. Everything open is going to close anyway, so save yourself a step.
4) Click on the magnifying glass in the top right corner, and type in "Self Service". Go to ND Self Service.
5) Locate the "Upgrade to MacOS Monterey" application and click "Run"
*NOTE: if you're already on Monterey, you won't see this in self-service. You're all done!
6) Leave your computer open and plugged into power, and let the update run its course. If you encounter any errors after your upgrade, please run "Computer Maintenance with Restart" via ND Self Service.
If you want, you can also drop off your device at the tech office and we can complete the update for you overnight.
